A really great resource I came across recently is the Museum of the American Gangster website. This website is a part of the Lower East Side History Project which is a non-profit organization sponsored by the Bowery Arts and Science. This project is organized by local historians, educators and preservationists. Part of their mission is to bring awareness to the Lower East Side’s historical significance. The group also specializes in two Gangster related walking tours. The first one, the Mafia walking tour, documents the birth of organized crime on the Lower East Side by showcasing the homes and hangouts of famous mobsters which include Al Capone and Lucky Luciano. The second tour focuses on the Jewish Mob and the immigration experience as it applies to the rise of gangsters. This tour is created with the help of the American Jewish Historical Society. By focusing on a more sensational aspect of the Lower East Side, I think these tours can bring in a new audience. People are fascinated by gangsterism, mafias, and mobsters so this tour is a really great way for people to learn about crime in New York City and walk in the footsteps of these famous criminals. The link to the tours is below.

This looks awesome! I read The Rise and Fall of the Jewish Gangster in America , and was really impressed by how close I was to many of the locations in the book. If I can find the time, I would do both of these tours next semester.
